Mr.Madhu Raman Acharya,is the former Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations and was elected Chairman of the Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) for the sixty-first session of the General Assembly. Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Acharya was his country’s Foreign Secretary from 2001 to 2005 and, before that, he served as Ambassador to Bangladesh (1998-2001). In 1997-1998, he was Deputy Chief of Mission in New Delhi, India, and, in 1996-1997, served as Joint Secretary in Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nepal. During the 1990s, he participated in United Nations missions in Cambodia, South Africa and Liberia. Mr. Acharya began his distinguished career in 1982 as Assistant Lecturer at his alma mater -– Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu. In 1983, he was appointed a Section Officer in the Ministry of Home Affairs, where he remained until 1990. He joined the Ministry of Finance in 1990 as Assistant Secretary, and from 1993 to 1996 he was Under-Secretary of Finance. He holds several degrees from Tribhuvan University and is the author of several books and publications.
